Millions of Americans are already wondering how much their Social Security checks could increase in 2027.
The latest Social Security COLA 2027 forecast points to an increase of around 3.6%, although that number is still only an estimate. The final cost-of-living adjustment will depend on inflation data released later this year.
For retirees, people receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and other beneficiaries, even a small change in the COLA can make a noticeable difference in monthly income.
Here is the latest Social Security COLA 2027 update and what beneficiaries should know.

Social Security COLA 2027 Forecast: What Is the Prediction?
The latest estimate from The Senior Citizens League puts the 2027 Social Security COLA prediction at 3.6%. That would be higher than the 2.8% COLA applied to benefits in 2026.
Investopedia also reported the 3.6% estimate, noting that it would represent the highest Social Security increase in several years. The Motley Fool, however, recently highlighted that the forecast has slipped from earlier estimates, showing why beneficiaries should not treat today’s projection as a final number.
Another estimate from AARP has put the potential increase slightly lower, at about 3.5%. In other words, current forecasts are generally clustering around the mid-3% range.
That could still change before the official announcement.
When Will the 2027 COLA Be Announced?
The biggest date to watch is October 14, 2026.
The final 2027 COLA will be calculated using inflation data from the third quarter of 2026. The Social Security Administration uses the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, commonly called CPI-W, to determine the annual adjustment.
That means the current 3.6% forecast is not guaranteed.
Inflation during August and September can still move the calculation higher or lower. This is why beneficiaries may see several different COLA predictions over the next few weeks.

What Would a 3.6% COLA Mean for Your Check?
A 3.6% increase would mean multiplying your current monthly Social Security benefit by 1.036.
For example:
- $1,500 benefit → about $1,554
- $2,000 benefit → about $2,072
- $2,500 benefit → about $2,590
- $3,000 benefit → about $3,108
These are simple examples, not guaranteed benefit amounts.
Your actual increase will depend on your current benefit. Medicare premiums, taxes and other deductions can also affect the amount that actually reaches your bank account.
The SSA’s latest published data show that the 2.8% COLA for 2026 increased the average retired-worker benefit from about $2,015 to $2,072. The average disabled-worker benefit increased from about $1,585 to $1,630.
Social Security COLA 2027 Disability Benefits: Will SSDI Increase?
Yes. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are generally adjusted by the annual COLA as well.
So if the 2027 COLA is ultimately 3.6%, eligible SSDI beneficiaries would receive the same percentage increase in their benefits.
For example, someone receiving $1,600 per month would see an increase of approximately $57.60 if a 3.6% COLA becomes official.
The important point is that the percentage applies to the benefit amount; it does not give every disabled beneficiary the same dollar increase.
SSI recipients are also affected by annual COLA adjustments. The SSA says COLAs provide annual increases in payments from both OASDI programs, including disability benefits, and SSI.

Why the 2027 COLA Forecast Could Change
It is tempting to look at a 3.6% prediction and assume that is what will appear in January 2027 checks.
But the forecast is not the official COLA.
The final number depends on the inflation readings used under the Social Security formula. If inflation is stronger than expected, the final COLA could be higher. If inflation cools, the adjustment could come in lower.
That is already happening with forecasts. Earlier projections were higher, while the latest estimates have moved closer to 3.5%–3.6%.

Bottom Line for Social Security Beneficiaries
The latest Social Security COLA 2027 forecast is encouraging for beneficiaries, with estimates currently around 3.5% to 3.6%.
However, it is important not to confuse a forecast with the official increase.
The next major milestone is the release of September inflation data and the expected October 14, 2026 announcement. Until then, the best approach is to use the current forecast for planning purposes while leaving room for the final number to change.
